At the Spanish Primera Liga, Real Madrid were still looking for their first league win of the season as they took on Espanyol at home. Madrid got off to a dream start after just four minutes when Zinedine Zidane fired the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net to put the home side 1-0 up. The champions were all over Espanyol and seven minutes later they went further ahead as Roberto Carlos drilled in one of his famous free kicks for a 2-0 lead. But the drama didn't end there as Luis Figo converted a spot kick, after just 19 minutes after he was fouled in the penalty area. Espanyol stunned the home crowd pulling one back, after just a minute into the second half. But Madrid soon replied to that assault with one of their own. Raul fired in from close range to put the home side 4-1 up after 59 minutes. The champions scored another goal as Real demolished Espanyol 5-1 for their first win in the Primera Liga. Meanwhile, Alaves were down 1-0 after Deportivo opened the scoring in the 25th minute through Jose Luis Amavisca. Deportivo were up 2-0 just into the second half as Amavisca scored again for the visitors. After an hour of the game, Alaves pulled one back through Llorens. The hosts leveled the match six minutes from time, Frabricio Coloccini scoring with a fine header. But Deportivo grabbed victory with a last gasp goal from Sergio in the final minute of normal time. Athletic Bilbao faced Valencia at home. It was Valencia who took the lead against the run of play one minute before half time with Roberto Ayala scoring his first goal of the season. The visitors then went 2-0 ahead two minutes into the second half with Pablo Aimar smashing the ball into the back of the net. Bilbao pulled a goal back in the 64th minute with Hoseba Etxeberria finally finding the target. Carlos Garcia finally levelled the scores on the stroke of full-time as both teams settled for a 2-2 draw. Celta Vigo and Mallorca had an indifferent start to their game. But Celta took the lead when Brazilian mid-fielder Edu scored giving Celta a 1-0 lead. In the 85th minute, Cataniha pounced on a rebound and slot the ball home to give Celta a 2-0 lead. In some of the other major matches, Real Betis beat Valladolid away while Barcelona had an easy win at home. Celta Vigo remain on top with 10 points from four games. Betis Deportivo and Villarreal follow up with nine points, with Barcelona coming in fifth with eight points.Topics mentioned in this article
