London:  Former Scotland international James McFadden has signed a short-term deal with Premier League outfit Sunderland after being released by Everton, 'Black Cats' manager Martin O'Neil said on Friday.

The 29-year-old Glaswegian had been out of contract after leaving the 'Toffees' at the end of the season, but has found a new home on Wearside as O'Neil throws the injury-plagued striker a three-month deal as he attempts to revive his career.

"Whether it's the James McFadden of old, which would be good news for us, that's something we will have to wait and see," O'Neill said.

"[It's] a three-month contract, which suits all parties."

The fiesty player who is generally used as a winger began his career with Motherwell where he made his debut at 17 and picked up his first international cap two years later under former Scotland manager Berti Vogts.

David Moyes signed him for his first spell at Everton in 2003 where he scored eleven goals in 109 appearances before moving to Birmingham City in 2008.

A serious knee injury sustained in 2010 hampered his career and after joining Everton for a second time last season was finally released after failing to make an impact.

He has scored 15 goals for Scotland but won the last of his 48 caps in 2010 before injuries and a frosty relationship with Scotland manager Craig Levein led to his international exile.
