When one of the most colourful cities in the world plays host to the biggest sporting event on the planet, spectacular things happen. And it is no different in the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro, which has embraced the 20th edition of the FIFA World Cup with open arms - a fact acknowledged by Google in its latest doodle.

Despite a few organizational glitches, the locals and hundreds of thousands of international tourists have thronged the capital and other Brazilian towns in eager anticipation. And Google, the internet search engine, in its latest doodle has paid tribute to the very spirit of Rio that will live on long after the football carnival leaves Brazilian shores.

Google celebrate major events and personalities with their much-loved doodle on the search home page and with the World Cup on, they have not had to look anywhere else for inspiration. The latest of their innovative designs depict a fan kicking a ball amid the slums of Rio de

Janeiro, which is home to 6.32 million people. The 26th largest city in the world is known for its laid-back lifestyle and fun-loving populace, and to let them soak in all the adrenaline-induced football over the next one month, the government has augmented an already long list of holidays.

This World Cup is already one of the most celebrated events. According to an Associated Press report, Brazil's victory over Croatia in the World Cup opener last Thursday generated as many as 58 million posts on Facebook, nearly five times more than this year's Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood.
