Birmingham: Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero produced late moments of brilliance to earn Manchester City a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday, keeping the champions in touch with Premier League leader Chelsea.

Toure dribbled to the edge of the penalty area in the 82nd minute and curled a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who had produced a string of second-half saves to keep Villa in the game.

Aguero, one of two City players to hit the post when the score was 0-0, rifled in a fierce shot from 20 yards (meters) in the 88th to guarantee the visitors a fourth win in seven matches in the defense of their title.

City provisionally moved to within two points of Chelsea, whose game in hand is against Arsenal on Sunday.

It's been a pretty mundane game and it's no great surprise it's still goalless at the break. Villa have worked hard but offered little in attack and cannot have been helped by the withdrawal of Gabriel Abgbonlahor just before kick-off. City have without doubt been the better side without looking anywhere near the champions they are. The visitors have had the two best efforts, Aleksandar Kolarov striking the outside of the left-hand post early on and Sergio Aguero seeing a header go just wide. Edin Dzeko has also blasted over from a great position and saw a late goalbound header kept out by the leg of Aly Cissokho. Villa have Christian Benteke on the bench remember, so we could yet get a goal or two.

Delph robs Kompany on the right touchline and finds Weimann, but the Austrian panics after finding himself in a good position and scuffs his shot so badly it was almost a fresh air shot.

City win a free-kick 30 yards from goal. Kolarov steps up and lifts a shot over the wall, but it bounces once before going a yard wide of the post.

Having just sung his praises, Dzeko makes a right mess of a great chance, blasting over the bar from 12 yards.

Aguero has looked sharp in the first half-hour, but don't discount Dzeko claiming the first goal. The City frontman has scored more Premier League goals in 2014 (14) than anyone else and 31 of his 48 top-flight strikes have come away from home.

Westwood's early ball looks to have put Weimann clean through, but Kompany is across to make a superb interception.

Kolarov delivers a wicked cross from the left that is perfect for Aguero, but his flicked header from 12 yards drifts just wide of the far post.
