India had a tentative start to the innings after opting to bat. Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane left relatively early and Gautam Gambhir came to the middle.
Virat Kohli at the other end looked typically steady as India looked to set a solid base.
Parthiv's wicket had been a setback but the Indians soon managed to get the score moving.
Gambhir was however, removed on 32 by Jade Dernbach, just when he was looking to cut loose.
Ditto with Kohli who reached 37 but was caught at the boundary by Kevin Pietersen off the bowling of Samit Patel.
The real match began now as Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni combined forces to tear the English bowling.
Raina scored a fluent 61 off 55 deliveries.
Raina was eventually dis-lodged by Steven Finn. The damage had begun however.
Dhoni took the mantle of scoring and hit 10 boundaries and a six to propel his team to 300.
The chase never looked like threatening the Indians as England lost two wickets inside the first 10 power-play overs.
Praveen took a wicket - Craig Kieswetter - but the real damage was dealt by the spinners.
Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets and was supported by R Aswhin who had as many wickets to show for his efforts.
Alastair Cook provided some resistance as he scored 60 but England finally wrapped up for a measly 174.
The win is the first since India's ODI win in the West Indies. The hosts go 1-0 up in the five-match series.
