Named after a liquor brand Royal Challenge, owned by business tycoon Vijay Mallya, the IPL’s Bangalore team was bought for whopping $111.6 million. Former India captain Rahul Dravid, being one of the ‘icon’ players, will lead the team.
Bought by India cements for $ 91 million, Chennai Superkings made the highest bid for the Indian skipper MS Dhoni and got him for over Rs six crore. The team also boasts of biggies like Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey, Muttiah Muralitharan.
Virender Sehwag led Delhi Daredevils was bought for $84 million by the GMR group. This team reads the names like McGrath, AB de Villers, Gautam Gambhir, Daniel Vettori, etc.
Deccan Chronicle, a powerful media house in southern India, bought the Hyderabad franchisee for $107 million and named it Deccan Chargers with wristy batsman VVS Laxman as its captain. Other highlight of this team is Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds, who was center of many controversies on India’s recent tour to Australia, but interestingly is highest paid international player in IPL.
The Mohali team of the Indian Premier League was bought by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia (Bombay Dyeing) and Dabur’s Mohit Burman for $ 76 million. The Punjab XI Kings will be led by Punjab da puttar and ‘icon’ player Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj’s team includes Sreesanth, Brett Lee, Irfan Pathan, etc.
With the trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Sourav Ganguly and coach John Buchanan, the IPL’s Kolkata team promises to be high both on entertainment and cricketing skills. SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment bagged the Kolkata team for $75.09 million.
Mukesh Ambani added another feather to his cap as his Reliance Industries bid highest for the Mumbai team of the Indian Premier League and walked away with its ownership for $111.9 million. The USP of the team is Sachin Tendulkar’s presence, who also happens to be an ‘icon player’ and eventually captain of the side.
Rajasthan Royals are owned by Emerging Media for $67 million. Legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne has been given the reins of the team as he has been appointed both the coach as well as the captain. Though they are being hailed as the weakest IPL team, Rajasthan Royals may prove to be the dark horse with likes of Graeme Smith, Mascarenhas, Younis Khan and Mohd. Kaif.
