Gary Ballance was the star for England with 79 - his maiden fifty - as the visitors managed 269 for seven in their allotted overs.
But the Aussie openers Aaron Finch and David Warner put on 163 for the first wicket to take the game away.
Warner continued his Ashes form to post a composed 65 as an all-pace England attack were driven to the ground.
