New Delhi:
Get set for the Badshah's and the Sherdils. No, Bollywood is not making a remake of Mughal e Azam. It is Jammu and Kashmir trying to galvanise sports-loving locals through the Kashmir Premier League, a 14-team tournament spanning over 50 matches beginning from Tuesday.
According to a report in the Indian Express, the KPL is being billed as a cricket tournament aimed at establishing peace in a region that has seen three summers of unrest. A joint-venture between the Indian Army and the state government, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said during the inauguration ceremony that he hoped the event would become a regular feature in the sports calender of the state.
While the opening match was won by the Srinagar Sherdils by 6 wickets, the victory itself pales in comparison to the fervour which the entire tournament seeks to generate.
