Karachi:
A box of Pakistan cricketers including skipper Younis Khan have refused to sign the new central contracts handed to them by the Pakistan Cricket Board and want to re-negotiate terms of the contracts.
"The players want the PCB to set up a mechanism in the central contracts that offers some compensation if they are not allowed to fulfill obligations with foreign leagues or clubs due to government or board policies," a source close to the players said.
Four cricketers Misbah-ul-Haq, Kamran Akmal, Sohail Tanvir and Umar Gul have already written a letter to the chief patron of the board, President Asif Ali Zardari, asking him to intervene into the matter and work out some compensation plan for the players.
They have said in their letter that due to government directives they have lost their earnings from the IPL and should be compensated in some manner.
The cricketers are also protesting against a clause that strips them of the monthly retainers if they go abroad to play foreign leagues for more than 30 days.
Besides Younis and his deputy Misbah, the list consists former captain Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal among others, sources said.
"The clause says that if we go abroad to play in foreign leagues for more then 30 days we will not get our monthly retainers for that period," one source said.
"Why should we forgo the monthly retainers which has nothing to do with our activities when we are not required to play for Pakistan," the source added.
The PCB recently awarded central contracts to 28 players under three categories, raising the Test match fees and have also set up a review committee to decide if more players should be given the contracts.
Sources also confirmed that initial reports which claimed Shoaib Malik had signed the central contract, were not correct.
"The players want the terms of the contracts reviewed because they are also not happy with the stiff penalties in the contract for violating the media policy of the board," the source said.
