Former captain Michael Vaughan feels after the humiliating innings defeat at the hands of West Indies in the first Test, every member of the England squad should motivate themselves and play as a team to bring up the standard of their performance.

Andrew Strauss' men are under-fire from all quarters after West Indies skittled out the visitors for mere 51 in the second innings to win the match by an innings and 23 runs at Sabina Park to secure a 1-0 lead in the four-Test series.

"At the end of the day it's about the players lifting themselves, it's not about someone doing it for them. Every single player must motivate themselves to make sure they're the one that makes the difference for England. As a collective unit we have to start playing as a team," he said.

Vaughan, who is eying the Ashes series at home later this year for his comeback into the national team, admitted that England failed to handle the Caribbean bowlers pressure which led to their downfall in the first match.

"They didn't play well and there's no point in saying anything otherwise," Vaughan said.

"I don't think we can defend the lads. I think they expect when they perform at that level and lose in that fashion they're to going to receive pelters, that's the nature of professional sport and its all about how you react to those pelters which is the real key," he added.

He also came in support for Ian Bell who is under the scanner after yet another failure in the number three position.

"There's a lot of pressure on Belly obviously, but sometimes the option is to give him one more game. He's failed in one game but he might get one more chance to put that right, we'll find out Friday morning when they announce the team," Vaughan said.

The second Test of the series starts in Antigua from from Friday.
