Basseterre, St. Kitts:
The young Caribbean pair shared a second-wicket stand of 262 that dominated a West Indies A total of 343-2 off 86 overs.
Simmons, who celebrated his 24th birthday four days ago, powered to an unbeaten 171. The slim right-hander slammed 19 fours and five sixes off 240 deliveries in his fifth first-class hundred.
Opening batsman Barath struck 18 fours and a six in compiling his third first-class century, a career-best 132. The 18-year-old faced 231 balls.
England, which lost the toss, had early success through pacer James Anderson.
Teenaged left-hander Kieran Powell (14) pulled a catch to deep midwicket at 28-1.
But there was to be no more success for the tourists until late in the final session as the two right-handers from Trinidad and Tobago dominated.
The diminutive Barath survived a few anxious moments early but blossomed to enjoy the fine batting conditions and small outfield.
Simmons, who has played eight one-day internationals for West Indies, was quickly into stride after replacing Powell and took offspinner Graeme Swann for a four and a six in one over.
Simmons arrived at his century in the first over after tea while Barath joined his countryman 45 minutes later with a six off Paul Collingwood.
Barath eventually fell to the part-time offspin of Kevin Pietersen, slashing to backward point.
But Simmons and Sewnarine Chattergoon (24 not out) further dulled the England attack with an unbroken stand of 53 before stumps.
The England camp on Thursday announced that former Pakistan legspinner Mushtaq Ahmed would continue as spin bowling coach for the first two tests after initially signing up for only the first two warmup matches.
Fielding coach Richard Halsall, also due to return home after the St. Kitts leg of the tour, has also had his stay extended until the end of the first test in Jamaica, which begins on Feb. 4.
