New Delhi:Former cricketers on Monday hailed India's 2-0 victory in the Test series against world champions Australia as a "remarkable achievement" and said it proved that the team had the potential to become number one in the near future.
The players said the victory was possible because of a combined effort and singled out skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for special praise, saying his inspired leadership galvanised the team.
"I am happy and thrilled over Dhoni's men beating the world's best squad on our soil. I must say that the wait is over and slowly the transition is taking place", chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth said.
"We will have to protect these players in order to prepare a winning combination in the 2011 World Cup. It is also necessary that we should keep maintaining this positive approach for winning matches both in longer and shorter versions of the game," he added.
Former chairman of the selection committee Dilip Vengsarkar said beating a champion team like Australia was an oustanding feat.
"We worked as a team. It is a great achievement, absolutely oustanding because Australia is a team which has been number one for the past 10-15 years", he said. "What I expect from this Indian team now is that since they have become number one in the world at this moment, they should sustain and remain in that position", he said.
Another former Indian captain Ravi Shastri was lavish in his praise of Dhoni and his team and said the victory will serve as a huge boost to Indian cricket.
"Defeating a champion team like Australia is indeed a great achievement. It shows that India is heading in the right direction", he said.
Former Indian pace spearhead Javagal Srinath was also effusive in his praise for the team, saying "we had all waited for this moment".
Srinath said the victory was possible because each and every player made contributions to the team's cause. "Everybody contributed, but the senior players were consistent right through the series. It made a lot of difference in the end", he said.
