The two teams, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, were unbeaten in the DLF IPL tournament prior to this match. Nevertheless, the match saw some brilliant performances on the field.
Chennai Super Kings pulled off a spectacular win against Kolkata Knight Riders in their third match of the DLF Indian Premier League tournament in Chennai on Saturday.
Matthew Hayden (71) mauled the Knight Riders bowlers and slammed an unbeaten half-century. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who came after Parthiv Patel's dismissal, joined the assault. Dhoni fired 43 runs off 27 balls with the help of 3 fours and 2 sixes.
After restricting Kolkata Knight Riders for 147 in 20 overs, Chennai Super Kings openers Matthew Hayden and Parthiv Patel started off nicely.
Super Kings lost just one wicket of Parthiv Patel (21) who was surprised by Ajit Agarkar's short and quick delivery. Parthiv tried to pull it deep, only to find Ishant Sharma under it.
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders just had the toss going their way. They elected to bat but failed to put up a big total on the flat wicket of the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Except Laxmi Ratan Shukla (42), no other batsman contributed much to the score of Knight Riders. Shukla perished in a dramatic run out by Joginder Sharma.
Chennai Super Kings bowlers did not allow Knight Riders to dominate them and kept themselves in the hunt from the beginning of the match.
New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram picked three wickets of Brendon McCullum (24), Ricky Ponting (0) and Murali Kartik (3) and was rightly adjudged as the Man of the Match. He sent McCullum and Ponting in the same over after initial thrashing from the former.
Palani Amarnath and Manpreet Gony claimed two wickets each while Joginder Sharma got the wicket of Sourav Ganguly.
Chennai Super Kings have played three matches in the tournament have won all three of them. Skipper MS Dhoni hopes to continue his tryst with victory in the forthcoming matches.
