Ruing that the MA Chidambaram pitch was too docile to produce a result, India coach Gary Kirsten said a slight bowler-friendly track would have made the first Test against South Africa more interesting.

Kirsten, who started his job as a coach against his home country in this Test, said the two teams will have to toil more to produce results in the remaining two matches.

"The guys played well on a flat wicket, (there was) not much assistance for the bowlers. Batsmen from both the sides were committed to the task. If the wicket had offered some assistance it would have helped.

"But certainly, one of the teams would have to take the initiative in the next two matches. We came close to doing it. But day four was a bit disappointing," Kirsten said after the match ended in a dull draw.

Showering compliments on opener Virender Sehwag, Kirsten said the Delhi batsman's fiery knock of 319 was the best he had ever seen.

"It is the best I have ever seen without any question. I am privileged to watch someone play at that pace and wide range of shots," he said.

On whether he offered any advice to Sehwag, Kirsten said, "These are international cricketers and they know what to do. There is no need to tell him to keep going for double or triple hundreds. It is wonderful to have individuals like them." On India's fielding in the match, Kirsten said, "We are looking to improve. That is one of the areas we will focus on. We are aware."
