New Delhi:
The selectors named a 14-man squad for the first two Tests of the three-match series beginning on March 26 but vice-captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh must clear a fitness Test on March 21.
Indian Cricket Board secretary Niranjan Shah said, "Harbhajan Singh has to undergo a fitness test on the 21st in Bangalore."
Opener Wasim Jaffer, who made just 49 runs in the 3 Tests in Australia, was lucky to keep his place.
Meanwhile, the in-form Gautam Gambhir was also kept out of the 14-man side for the first two Tests against the South Africans, despite making 2 hundreds in the tri-series in Australia. Apparently the selectors wanted to include him but the board was insistent on keeping the squad to 14.
Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman have all been retained in the side, which would be led by Anil Kumble.
The first Test will be played in Chennai from March 26 to 30 and the second in Ahmedabad from April 3 to 7.
Squad: Anil Kumble (captain), Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wicketkeeper), Harbhajan Singh, Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan, Rudra Pratap Singh and Piyush Chawla.
