Birmingham:
South Africa have defeated Bangladesh by 9 wickets in a league match of the ICC Champions Trophy one-day cricket tournament at Edgbaston today. Bangladesh captain Rajin Saleh won the toss and elected to bat first, but the Bangladeshi batting crumbled in the face of the face of South African attack, and were bowled out for a paltry 93. The South Africans easily reached the target in 17.5 overs. Earlier, the minnows lost their top four batsmen for only 20 runs to be eventually bundled out in 31.3 overs. Nafis Iqbal was the only Bangladeshi batsman to offer some resistance. He made 40 runs from 80 balls. He also shared a 43-run fifth wicket partnership with wicketkeeper batsman Khaled Mashud, which went a long way in helping the Asian team avoid the ignominy of registering the lowest total in one-day cricket history. Charl Langeveldt was the pick of the South African bowlers, picking up three wickets from seven bowlers. After Langeveldt made early inroads, Makhaya Ntini (3-19) and Nicky Boje (3-23) sliced through the middle and lower order. Bangladesh, South Africa and West Indies make up the Pool B of the Champions Trophy. (With PTI inputs)Topics mentioned in this article
