Mahela Jayawardene piled on 237 runs as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 486 on the second day of the first test against South Africa today. Along the way Jayawardene shared a record eighth-wicket partnership for Sri Lanka of 170 runs with Chaminda Vaas. Jayawardene, starting the day on 116, was in imperious form, dominating an increasingly weary South African attack during a chanceless eight-and-a-half hour stay at the wicket. The 27-year-old right-hander faced 415 balls, hitting 25 fours and three sixes. All the bowlers suffered at the hand of Jayawardene as visitors struggled to break a frustrating eighth wicket stand. Jayawardene raced to the second double hundred of his career, sweeping Nick Boje for four and then reached the landmark in style, with a powerfully hit straight six two balls later. Vaas hit 10 boundaries during his 142-ball 69 before drilling a catch to mid-off where Nantie Hayward took the catch on the second attempt. Vass was just five runs short of his highest score at international level. Jayawardene was finally trapped lbw by Mornantau Hayward, just five runs short of his career best total of 243. The South African then bowled Muttiah Muralitharan first ball to wrap up the innings a few minutes before the tea break. Hayward, Pollock shine Hayward finished with three wickets for 81 runs but captain Sean Pollock was South Africa's best bowler, finishing with four for 48. With visiting captain Graham Smith unable to bat after spending time off the field with a virus, the temporary combination of Martin van Jaarsveld and Boeta Dippennar not only survived but prospered in the last session of play. Muttiah Muralitheran was already extracting large amounts of turn, but the wicket was still true enough for the South African pair to play their shots. At the close of play South Africa were none for 82 with Dippenaar on 46 and Van Jaarsveld 30 not out when stumps were called. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
