The International Cricket Council today announced the use of new technology to assist umpires in the Champions Trophy cricket tournament beginning in September. The ICC said that the umpires on the field will be given ear phones connected to the stump microphone to help them hear nicks better and arrive at more accurate decisions. Also, only television umpires will rule on no balls during the tournament so that the field umpires can focus on the game. Slow bowlers under scrutiny The tournament would also be used to conduct research into all slow bowlers on view in order to solve the problem of "illegal bowling actions", ICC President Ehsan Mani and Chief Executive Malcolm Speed said at a press conference today. These technology aids will only be used on a trial basis in the high-profile tournament in England featuring all nine Test playing nations and two qualifiers. Meanwhile, former West Indian captain Clive Lloyd has also called for greater use of technology in cricket. He said hawk eye should be used for LBW decisions as well.
