Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was unsparing in his criticism after the two-time champions crashed out of the Indian Premier League 2014, singling out his star international cricketers.

Chasing 227 to enter their sixth final, the Super Kings were off to a blazing start, thanks to Suresh Raina's 87 off 25 balls before his run out triggered a collapse.

None of CSK's four overseas batsmen did anything worthwhile in the game that mattered. Faf du Plessis perished in the second ball of the innings for a duck while Dwayne Smith managed only seven, Brendon McCullum scored 11 and David Hussey 1. (Scorecard | Match report)

A usually diplomatic Dhoni lashed out at the foreign players after the 24-run defeat: "We should have chased the target, especially after the kind of innings Raina played. We lost it in the middle overs. It was some very irresponsible batting by some very experienced cricketers."

Dhoni, who himself remained unbeaten on 42 was also critical of his spinners. R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, gave away 92 runs in their eight overs and the captain was clearly miffed.

"When the stakes are high you can't commit mistakes. We need our spinners to improve their bowling on flat tracks," said Dhoni.

The Super Kings skipper however lauded Virender Sehwag for his match-winning 122 off 58 balls: "Once Viru pa gets going there is hardly any bowler who can stop him and in our bowling there is no bowler who can push him on the back foot."

Dhoni, not one to make excuses, said his side missed the services of Dwayne Bravo, one of the retained players. The West Indian all-rounder was sidelined early in the tournament after picking up a shoulder injury in the UAE.
