London:
Anil Kumble was named the Man of the Match while James Anderson and Zaheer Khan were adjudged Man of the Series.
Chasing 500 for a win, England showed resilience to bat out the entire final day and deny India a 2-0 win in the series.
The hosts, in their second innings, were 369 for 6 at stumps with Matt Prior batting on 12 and Ryan Sidebottom, three not out in the middle, leaving India 4-wickets away from a win.
Kevin Pietersen topscored for the hosts with 101, while Ian Bell (62) played a gutsy knock down the order.
The series defeat, however, snapped England's glorious run of 11 unbeaten home series.
England openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook showed resistance before the former fell to RP Singh after doing all the hard work for 32 runs.
Cook followed him to the pavilion soon after as he was foxed by Anil Kumble for 43 runs and Laxman took a sharp catch at leg gully. The duo put up a 79-run opening partnership.
India's quest for victory was thwarted by England's two best batsmen, Kevin Pietersen and Michael Vaughan.
The duo dug deep to score a 66-run partnership before Vaughan was done in by Sreesanth for 42 runs which included five boundaries.
Paul Collingwood and Pietersen then almost batted India out with a 114-run partnership before Sreesanth struck again to remove Collingwood who was trapped plumb in front for 40 runs.
Resolute Pietersen reached his 10th century to keep India at bay before Sreesanth snared him for 101 runs to give India a chance in the match.
Despite an inexplicable decision by Rahul Dravid not to enforce follow-on and then a collapse of the Indian top order, England was finally set a target of 500 runs in the third and final Test at the Oval.
At close of the fourth day's play, the hosts was 56 without loss with Andrew Strauss on 23 and Alastair Cook on 27.
