Mumbai:Former India skipper Polly Umrigar today expressed his opposition to the entry of a foreign team in the Duleep Trophy inter-zonal tournament. "The move dilutes the importance of the event," said Umrigar. "This experiment - under which the England 'A' team took part in the Duleep Trophy last season - should be discontinued," he added. "What is the point in allowing a foreign team to play in the tournament? It devalues the tournament and dilutes its importance," the former skipper said. Umrigar, recipient of the prestigious C K Nayadu award, also felt that the junior domestic tournament's format should be in conformity with the senior tournaments. "It (the tournament formats) should be uniform. It will help the juniors in making the transition from the lower to the higher level without any difficulty," the one-time national Test centuries record holder claimed. Umrigar also supported the views expressed by Indian captain Sourav Ganguly for introducing a two-tier system in Test cricket when the International Cricket Council (ICC) confers Test match status on more countries. "It's a very good suggestion and I support it. In fact the Ranji Trophy two-tier system, under which there is promotion and relegation, is the best example for the ICC to follow," Umrigar added.
