Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody on Tuesday signed on as Director of Cricket at the Melbourne Renegades for the Aussie version of the Indian Premier League - the Big Bash. Moody, 48, will be responsible for list management, talent identification and recruitment.
The experienced mentor already has close ties to the Renegades through head coach Simon Helmot, who was delighted with the appointment. "I've admired Tom's coaching and man-management from afar for many years," Helmot said. (Also read: Can IPL 2014 rise above scams?)
"Last season I enjoyed the privilege of assisting him at the Hyderabad Sunrisers during the Indian Premier League. It was a wonderful learning experience, and one I'm looking forward to repeating when this year's IPL begins this week.
"To have Tom working with the Renegades as Director of Cricket is a real boon for the club. It also takes a lot of pressure off me, as coach, and our CEO Stuart Coventry, knowing that this newly-created role will be filled by such a capable T20 tactician.
"We look forward to welcoming him to the club and working together to build a list capable of making a serious play for the BBL|04 and future titles." (Read: Upbeat Sunrisers bank on Dhawan, Steyn and Co.)
Moody also has strong ties to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 competition, where he was named Director of Cricket in 2014. Helmot will coach Trinidad and Tobago in this year's CPL, overseeing a side that includes Renegades all-rounder Dwayne Bravo.
Renegades CEO Stuart Coventry said the addition of Moody to the back-room team was a significant move that would assist with talent identification, negotiation and retention at Etihad Stadium.
"Any club in the BBL would love to have Tom on board in this capacity," Coventry said. "His T20 knowledge is enviable, as is his intelligence on players around the world. He'll be working behind the scenes to ensure the best long-term results for the Renegades at the recruitment table."
