Smith to captain Africa in clash with Asia

South African cricket captain Graeme Smith will lead an African XI against an Asian XI in the last of three one-day matches to be played later this month.

Johannesburg:South African cricket captain Graeme Smith will return from suspension to lead an African XI against an Asian XI in the last of three one-day matches to be played later this month. The inaugural Afro-Asian Cup, which has full one-day international status, will be held on August 17, 20 and 21 in South Africa. Smith, serving a four-match ban for the Proteas' slow over rate during their victorious tour of the West Indies, will take over from Shaun Pollock as skipper after the opening two matches. The first match will be played at Centurion and the other two in Durban. The 19-man African squad for the tournament includes 13 South Africans, three Kenyans and three Zimbabweans. Inzy leads Asians Pakistan captain Inzamam ul-Haq leads the 15-member Asian squad, with Indian captain Rahul Dravid as vice-captain. The Asian team includes six players from Pakistan, four from India, four from Sri Lanka and one from Bangladesh. Two players from Bangladesh and one from Sri Lanka are on standby. Speaking at a press conference in Johannesburg, Africa Cricket Association president Peter Chingoka of Zimbabwe said the aim of the series was to raise money for development in Africa and Asia. "The idea is ultimately to have similar contests at A level, under-19, under-15, and under-13,'' he said. Two of South Africa's top fast bowlers - Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel - were unavailable for selection because of county commitments in England.
