Sanath Jayasuriya put his name down in history today by becoming the fourth batsman in one-day cricket to complete 10,000 runs. One of the world's most feared hitters, it's been a well deserved and extremely entertaining journey for the left-hander who made his one-day debut way back in 1989 but only announced his arrival in the 1996 World Cup. And after reaching the 10,000 run milestone in one-day cricket during the Indian Oil Cup tri-series final against India at Colombo. Not many would have beleived that the same man had been writhing with pain after dislocating his right shoulder earlier in the tournament. Together with Romesh Kaluwitharna, 36-year-old Jayasuriya, one of cricket's most famous Buddhists, had redefined the openers slot during the 1996 World Cup and continues to bat in the same style even a decade later. On Tuesday, he became the fourth player to reach the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar, Inzamam ul-Haq and Saurav Ganguly. He might average the least in this club but perhaps what statistics do not reveal is Jayasuriya's superb all-round capabilities. In fact, he has now become only the first cricketer to complete the triple of 10,000 runs, more than 250 wickets and 100 catches in one-day cricket. That he has been India's nemesis is also no secret. The southpaw has single-handedly taken matches away from India. His last match against Dravid's men at Dambulla being a perfect example from recent times. The Matara Marauder, as Jayasuriya is known for his sizzling batting style, has hit five centuries and 11 fifties against India. On Tuesday, he also joined Inzamam-ul Haq and Saed Anwar in becoming only the third batsman to aggregate 2000 runs vs India (2013). No wonder then that Sri Lanka, which may have discovered some new talent lately, still look towards Jayasuriya when it comes to experience and launching rescue missions, especially against India.
