Rajkot: An unbeaten century by middle order batsman Sheldon Jackson, coupled with his 138 runs partnership for the fourth wicket with Sagar Jogiyani, helped Saurashtra score 235 for the loss of four wickets on the opening day of their four-day group "B" Ranji trophy match against Uttar Pradesh.
At the stumps, Sheldon Jackson was batting on 102 facing 184 balls, hitting fourteen fours and one six and Arpit Vasavada on 17 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium, Khandheri.
Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Shah won the toss and decided to bat first.
However, the hosts did not have a good start as both the openers Chirag Pathak (4) and Bhushan Chauhan (0) departed early falling to R P Singh and Imtiaz Ahmed, respectively. Jaydev Shah made quick fire 31 from 40 balls with six fours.
The dismissal of Saurashtra skipper put the hosts under pressure as Saurashtra were tottering at 55 for 3. But Jogiyani and Jackson tried to recover from the early damage, putting on 138 runs for the fourth wicket before Jogiyani's patience inning came to an end. He made 74 facing 237 balls with 12 fours.
For Uttar Pradesh, leg spinner Piyush Chawla was the most successful bowler taking 2 wickets for 61 runs while R P Singh and Imtiaz Ahmed had a wicket each conceding 38 runs and 47 runs respectively.
Brief Score:- Saurashtra 235 or 4 in 90 overs (Sagar Jogiyani (74), Sheldon Jackson (102 not out), Arpit Vasavada 17 not out), Piyush Chawla (2-61) against Uttar Pradesh.
