Lahore:
Pakistan's bowling attack combined on Tuesday to spoil England's strong start to the third and final cricket Test and its bid for a series-levelling win. England failed to capitalise on a century opening partnership between captain Michael Vaughan (58) and Marcus Trescothik (50) to finish the first day at 248 for six. Paul Collingwood (71 not out) could have been out on 54 when fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar found the thin inside edge of the bat behind the wickets, only to see umpire Darrell Hair ruling in favour of the batsman. Collingwood hit 11 fours in his unbeaten knock with Shaun Udal, who was batting on 10 when bad light stopped play 13 overs before scheduled stumps. Solid start Off-spinner Shoaib Malik (3-58) claimed three wickets in 17 balls in the second session. And medium fast bowler Rana Naved (2-62) claimed wickets on either side of the tea break to dismiss dangermen Kevin Pietersen (34) and Andrew Flintoff (12). Vaughan and Trescothick both scored fine half centuries to gave their team a good foundation of 101 runs when Malik struck after lunch. Vaughan completed his half century in the first session before he swept straight to Mohammad Yousuf at square leg off a Malik ball soon after the break. Vaughan, replacing Andrew Strauss as opener, hit 10 fours -- including three in one over off paceman Mohammad Sami. Ian Bell top edged a sweep to Yousuf, this time at short fine leg, after scoring only four. England slipped from 101-0 to 115-3 when Trescothick also fell while attempting a sweep shot. The ball hit the boot of the left-hander and looped into the air as Akmal dived forward to snap a brilliant one handed catch inches of the ground. Steady innings Pietersen contributed 68 runs with Collingwood to steady the innings, but was dismissed in the last over before tea to a one-handed diving catch by Akmal off the bowling of Naved, leaving England on 183 for four at tea. Trescothick needed 47 minutes and 27 balls to score his first runs and had a lucky break when Akmal failed to grab a thick edge in Malik's first over of the innings. Pakistan new ball bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Rana Naved consistently bowled on the line of off stump and missed the edge of the bat on a number of occasions with their swing bowling in the first hour. However, once the England openers saw out the first hour, Vaughan and Trescothick smashed 17 boundaries in between them and the England skipper brought up his half century with nine fours off 70 balls.
