Wellington:
All-rounder Chris Cairns has been recalled to the New Zealand cricket team for next month's Chappell-Hadlee limited-overs series against Australia, but captain Stephen Fleming is in doubt for health reasons. Cairns, 35, was dropped from the New Zealand team, which played five limited-overs matches in South Africa this month after performing poorly on its earlier tour to Zimbabwe. New Zealand lost the South African series 4-0, with one match abandoned, leading to calls for the 208-match veteran Cairns to be reinstated. "We sent Chris away to work on his cricket fitness and he has shown a great deal of discipline in his training and matches and we believe he is ready for a return to international cricket,'' New Zealand coach John Bracewell said. Cairns earns his recall in place of Andre Adams, who is injured, while off-spinner Jeetan Patel has been omitted. Fleming's availability for the three-match series is in doubt for undisclosed health reasons. "Stephen Fleming may not be available for the first match, following a personal medical matter, but hopes to be available for the remainder of the series,'' Bracewell said. "Daniel Vettori will captain the Black Caps should Stephen not be available and this would present him with an excellent opportunity to further his development in this area,'' he added. Australia plays New Zealand on December 3 in Auckland, December 7 in Wellington and December 10 in Christchurch.
