Brett Lee took five wickets and Nathan Bracken added four as Australia won the first cricket Test by 379 runs Sunday, taking the last eight West Indian wickets for just 44 runs. Lee took a career-best 5-30 while Bracken, playing his first Test in two years, claimed a personal best of 4-48, including two wickets in two balls. Australia declared on its overnight score of 283 for two wickets, setting the West Indies what would have been a world-record total of 509 to win. The result was the 11th-biggest win by runs margin in Test history. Only low point The only low point for Australia was allrounder Shane Watson leaving the field with a shoulder injury, placing him in doubt for the second Test starting on November 17 in Hobart. The West Indies went to lunch at 78-2, but were bowled out for 129 before the scheduled tea break. Australia captain Ricky Ponting was named man of the match for his 149 in the first innings and 104 not out in the second. Devon Smith was unable to repeat his first innings of 88, out for three when he edged a short-pitched ball from Lee to first slip where Shane Warne took a diving catch at 1-11. Chris Gayle made 33, including two sixes in one over off Glenn McGrath, but he was also caught by Warne when Watson found the outside edge with the total at 53. Major collapse The fall of West Indies star Brian Lara for 14, caught in the gully off the bowling of Bracken at 85-3 in the third over after lunch, began a major collapse. It continued Lara's mediocre run with the bat. He had innings of 0-5-0 for the World XI in three Super Series limited-overs matches against Australia, was five and 36 in the Super Test match and was out for one last weekend in a tour match against Queensland state. He made 30 in the first innings here before he was given out to a contentious lbw decision. Bracken trapped West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul lbw for seven before Lee had Ramnaresh Sarwan caught behind for 31 at 99-5. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Ramdin (6) was caught behind off Lee. One run later Daren Powell was lbw to Bracken, who bowled Fidel Edwards for a duck next ball. But the left-arm swing bowler was unable to complete the hat trick. Lee then claimed the last two wickets - Corey Collymore (4) and Jermaine Lawson (1) - just before rain started to fall at the Gabba ground. The record for a successful fourth-innings run chase is the 418 for seven by the West Indies against Australia at St. John's, Antigua, in May 2003. Warne took five first-innings wickets for 48, the 33rd five-wicket haul of his test career, on Saturday to help bowl out the West Indies for 210 in reply to Australia's first innings of 435.
