New Delhi: Desmond Haynes might still be camping in the Caribbean waiting for his visa but that will not stop the BCCI from going ahead on Thursday with its selection process to pick a man as the new coach for the Indian cricket team. Greg Chappel is the favourite but Tom Moody and Mohinder Amarnath might just spring a surprise. The former Australian captain is being tipped as the next coach of the Indian cricket team. Race wide open However, the BCCI insists that the race is still wide open. Whatever the BCCI might say, with Desmond Haynes not likely to make it in time for the interview and Mohinder Amarnath not quite a favourite with the present lot of Indian cricketers, a toss up between Australians Chappel and 39-year-old Tom Moody is on the cards. While Moody has the backing of some of the senior players in the squad, Chappel, who lost out to John Wright for the same post in 2000, is said to be a favourite with the Indian captain. But many former cricketers feel Chappel's experience could win over Moody's exuberance. In the uncertainty of who India's next coach will be, one thing is certain, the six member selection committee will take their time in deciding who John Wright's replacement should be. However, once the selection is made handling star players and getting India back to its winning ways is something the new coach will have to deal with on an immediate basis.
