New Zealand were 158 for six in their second innings, needing a further 310 runs to reach their victory target of 468, when bad light forced an early close to the fourth day of the second Test against England at Headingley on Monday.
New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum was nought not out and Tim Southee four not out.
England lead this two-match series 1-0 after their 170-run win in the first Test at Lord's.
