Delhi Test, Day 1: Statistical Highlights

Shane Watson led Australia out in Test matches for the first time and Ajinkya Rahane made a long awaited Test debut but not much else changed on Day 1 of the fourth and final Test. India dominated and the Australian top-order batsmen struggled against the onslaught of spin.

Here is a look at the statistical highlights from Day 1:

# For the third time in an overseas Test series, Australia have fielded 16 players or more - the first two instances being 17 against the West Indies in the Caribbean in 1983-84 and 16 against England in 1985 in England.

# David Warner has registered his second duck in Tests - his first was against Sri Lanka - a golden duck - at Sydney in January this year.

# Warner is averaging 27.53 overseas as compared to his home average of 49.83.

# Ravichandran Ashwin has produced his career-best bowling performance in a Test series - his first instance of 25 wickets in a Test series. His previous best tally was 22 at an average of 22.90 in three Tests against the West Indies in 2011-12.

# Ashwin (26 at 19.65 runs apiece) is the seventh Indian bowler to capture 25 wickets or more in a Test series against Australia, joining Harbhajan Singh (32 at 17.03 in three Tests in 2000-01), Bishan Singh Bedi (31 at 23.87 in five Tests in 1977-78), Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (28 at 25.14 in five Tests in 1977-78), Anil Kumble (27 at 25.37 in four Tests in 2004-05), Dilip Doshi (27 at 23.33 in six Tests in 1979-80) and Erapalli Prasanna (26 at 25.84 in five Tests in 1969-70 and 25 at 27.44 in four Tests in 1967-68). Prasanna is the only Indian spinner to accomplish the feat twice against Australia.

# Dhoni has lost four successive tosses in a Test series for the first time. For the second time, he lost all the tosses in a Test series - the first instance being against Sri Lanka in the three-Test series in 2010.

# Phillip Hughes (45) completed 1,000 runs away from home - his tally being 1038 at an average of 39.92 in 15 Tests, including three hundreds and four fifties. He is averaging just 24.00 in nine home Tests - his aggregate being 408, including two fifties.

# Peter Siddle (47 not out) has posted his career-best score, surpassing the 43 against England at Sydney in January 2011.

# Siddle's innings is the highest by an Australian number nine batsman against India at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

# Siddle and Smith were involved in an eighth-wicket partnership of 53 - Australia's highest against India at Feroz Shah Kotla, eclipsing the 51 by Geoff Dymock and Peter Sleep in October 1979.

# Ravindra Jadeja has dismissed Australian captain in six innings out of seven - Michael Clarke (five times) and Shane Watson (once).
