Don't forget Dravid, the Test skipper: Gavaskar

Gavaskar says Dravid's record as a Test skipper is no less than Dhoni or Ganguly. For Sunny, it's not only about numbers as it is difficult to pick who is India's best.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar said on Tuesday that Rahul Dravid's record as Test captain for India was commendable - even if not remembered by many - as the victories the team registered under him were mostly against tough opponents in foreign conditions.

While Gavaskar praised Mahendra Singh Dhoni for overtaking Sourav Ganguly as India skipper with maximum Test victories - 22 against Ganguly's 21 - he also highlighted Dravid's abilities in securing momentous victories in the past.

"The debate about the best Test captain will always continue. (But) People do not speak about Rahul Dravid. Dravid's overseas record (as skipper) was outstanding. He has been the captain to win in West Indies after 30-odd years and similarly in England after 20-something years. But nobody talks about Rahul Dravid as a captain," he said.

Under Dravid, India played 25 Tests and won eight between 2004 and 2007. He led his team to gritty wins in West Indies and England while his record as skipper Down Under is also commendable even if short - a win from two Tests.

In contrast, Dhoni despite his sterling record as skipper, has won five and lost nine matches when marshaling fellow players abroad. Ganguly, before him, fared slightly better with 11 wins and 10 defeats from 28 Tests played as skipper of the touring side.

Gavaskar though believes Dhoni in the current context has a lot more to offer, still.

"Dhoni as a skipper has changed since the England series. He is now more pro-active rather than reactive," said the veteran player who himself featured in 125 Tests for India. Gavaskar also feels that Dhoni should be left undisturbed as India's skipper till 2019!
