India's Thomas Cup captain Anup Sridhar is confident that the Jain University from Bangalore will perform well and win the Toyota University Cricket Championship. Reflecting back on his college days, the 29-year-old said that the cricket team always brought back laurels and that the current batch will maintain the legacy.
Wishing the Southern Champs the very best ahead of the tournament that starts Saturday, Sridhar, who represented India in the Beijing Olympics in 2008, said he was happy to know that the side will play in TUCC, after winning the all-India Rohinton Baria Trophy.
"I am glad the team has reached the final of the Toyota University Cricket Championship. I wish them all the best,” said the top Indian shuttler, whose best world ranking was 24.
"I remember from my days of playing inter-college tournaments that our cricket team always performed very well. We would always win first place and I hope they do the same again," Sridhar said.
Reminding the players that Ab Hamari Baari Hain – the tournament's war-cry which means 'Now, it is our turn' – Sridhar has put his faith on players like Samarth R who helped Jain University defeat Mumbai University in the final of the Rohinton Baria Trophy.
While Samarth scored a century and took three wickets in the match, he has skilled players as teammates who have the potential to deflect the challenge from the Jaunpur team – their first opponents.
The team is under the leadership of right-handed batsman Kaunain Abbas and will play its first match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday.
