Jaunpur is best known for the legend of Sher Shah Suri also known as Sher Khan. It has its own version of Bollywood, the Bhojpuri style. But recently it has come on the cricketing map courtesy the boys from Vir Bahadur Singh University who will play in the Toyota University Cricket Championship.
These boys come from a place where traditions still hold great value and their hard work saw them qualify for the All India Inter University Tournament as the East Zone champions. Their lack of experience may have eliminated them in the quarters of the Rohinton Baria Trophy but they hope to use this upcoming tournament to cement their place among the cricketing giants at university level.
The skipper Bijendra Kumar Singh in particular speaks of Praveen Dubey. He feels that this kid has the all-round skills to make it into the Indian team one day.
These boys are a happy bunch of players and always in a cheerful mood and if their music skills are anything to go by then they would certainly have been musicians if not cricketers. But they know how hard it is to get where they are and they are not in a mood to let it go.
Time and again the players of Jaunpur may have been unlucky but the TUCC ensures that they have a chance to make good of their game. It may be a resurrection of the forgotten and also the advent of the next generation. Be as it may these boys from Vir Bahadur Singh University will now have their moment under the sun.
