New Delhi:Local favourite Parimarjan Negi outwitted Vidit Santosh Gujarathi to remain in the lead but it was SP Sethuraman who cornered the fifth round glory with his stunning triumph over Grandmaster Evgeny Gleizerov of Russia in the seventh Parsvnath International Chess Tournament here on Wednesday.
International Master Roktim Bandyopadhyay too pulled off a surprise by humbling Grandmaster Magesh Chandran.
At the halfway stage of the tournament, Negi, with five points from as many rounds, now share the lead along with Uzbek Grandmaster Safin Shukhrat, Grandmaster Petr Kostenko of Kazakhstan and Boris Katalymov of Kazakhstan.
Safin beat Prathamesh Mokal while Kostenko got better of C Praveen Kumar in their matches on Wednesday.
Displaying a fine tactical game Veteran International Master Katalymov defeated Grandmaster Mikhail Ulibin of Russia in the fifth round.
The day had its normal share of upsets with top being Sethuraman's victory over Gleizerov in just 31 moves.
Among others, Delhi based International Master Sriram Jha held national champion and Grandmaster Surya Sekhar Ganguly to a creditable draw while former national champion Dibyendu Barua also had to be satisfied with half point against Djuraev Sokhib of Tajikistan.
