Kozhikode:
Fresh from its 12-day coaching camp under Russian Grandmaster Ruslan Sherbakov, the Indian women's team is fully geared up to put up a tough fight at the Chess Olympiad commencing in Spain from October 15, team Captain GM Koneru Humpy said today. "The coaching, including rigorous physical exercises, has really helped the team to prepare both physically and mentally and we hope to do well," said the Arjuna awardee. However, the Andhra girl said she could join the camp only four days ago as she was away in Delhi. Asked if the team, also comprising S Vijayalakshmi, D Harika and Nisha Mohota, would manage to win the gold, she said the competition would be quite tough with the presence of teams like Russia and China. "However, our job is to give the best." About the coaching, arranged by the All India Chess Federation with the Centre's support, she said it mattered quite a lot as besides gaining sufficient playing practice, it had also helped them to be fit enough to adjust to the conditions in Spain. "It is certainly the best team we can have and now it is up to us to perform as a group and emerge victorious," she said. Nisha said the camp had been very useful as the players got sufficient opportunity to train under Sherbakov. Vijayalakshmi, who is now in Chennai, would join the team in Delhi on Wednesday enroute to Spain. The six-member men's team, coached by GM Elizbar Ubilava, is led by Viswanathan Anand.
