Mallorca, Spain:

Grandmaster Koneru Humpy and Women Grandmaster Nisha Mohota scored their second straight victories over Cuban opponents and guided the Indian team to another 2.5-0.5 triumph in the second round of the women's section of 36th Chess Olympiad. Germany, Kazakhstan and Latvia emerged as joint leaders with 6 points from as many games in this 14-rounds event being played under FIDE's Swiss rules for team competition. As many as six teams, top seed China, Netherlands, Vietnam, Slovenia, Sweden and Russia share the next spot in the standing list with 5.5 points apiece while the Indian eves are next in contention along with Bulgaria, Serbia Montenegro, Poland, United States and Hungary. Still 36 games remain in the event. Koneru Humpy again turned out to be the most reliable in the team as she overpowered Arribas Maritza from the black pieces. On the second board for India, teenager Dronavalli Harika opened her Olympiad score after settling for a draw with Marrero Yaniet while Nisha Mohota had to work very hard to g et the better of Vivian Ramon on the third board. Humpy was at her technical best in getting past Maritza who played white. It was a Modern defence game wherein Humpy had little troubles in securing the balance. The middle game looked a bit intense at the outset but Humpy made it look easy with her natural play. Capitalising on a simple error, Humpy won an exchange and handled in the remaining complexities in masterly fashion to outwit Maritza. (PTI)
