Sofia:
Viswanathan Anand put behind the last round disaster to inflict a crushing defeated on classical champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia in the 7th round of the Mtel Masters chess tournament here today. The Indian, who had lost to Bulgarian Veselin Topalov in the previous round, recorded his first victory in this category-20 tournament to take his points tally to 3.5 points from a possible seven. Meanwhile, overnight leader and former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine opted for a quick draw against world's top woman player Judit Polgar of Hungary to assure himself of atleast joint lead after seven rounds. The other game of the double round robin event between Michael Adams of England and Topalov was still in progress at the time of going to press. With Ponomariov on 4 points, Anand is next in line at the moment along with Polgar. Kramnik remained on 3 points after his terible loss while Adams and Topalov are also on the same points with an extra game in hand. The cliche about the lull before the storm came true in Anand' game. While it was almost an eerie silence in the Indian camp here after Anand's loss to Topalov in the previous round, the moods changed dramatically after the Indian ace recorded a fluent victory. Also the fact that Anand won against the Petroff defence, that is slowly gaining in reputation of being an equal opening, simply added to his satisfaction. The game in fact had nothing except the spectacular result for Anand. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
