New Delhi:A major embarrassment has resulted out of an unnecessary controversy over whether 3-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand is an Indian citizen or not.
The matter came to the forefront when the ICM or the International Congress of Mathematicians wanted to confer a doctorate on Anand in Hyderabad. The decision though has been delayed because the Human Resource Development ministry raised a query about whether Anand has an Indian passport.
The confusion it seems has stemmed from the fact that Anand is an NRI who lives in Spain for most of the year.
Anand's wife Aruna though has told NDTV that they do not have much information as the matter was being handles by the ICM.
"All that I know is that Anand was asked if he would accept a doctorate degree while he was to be at Hyderabad for the congress of mathematcians which he did. Then in July they asked me for a copy of Anand's passport which I sent them so those are the only 2 pieces of information that we have".
On being asked whether she wrote a terse mail stating that Anand is an an NRI and not a Spanish citizen, she said, "I did not write a terse mail, it was just a correspondence between ICM and myself".
"The question was are you sure Anand is an Indian citizen and my answer to that was he is and has always been an Indian citizen and I even sent a copy of his passport", she added.
