Hyderabad:
Basking in the glory of winning the second GM norm, junior world champion Koneru Humpy defeated Dusko Prelevic of Yugoslavia in the penultimate round to lead the table with eight points in the Third Saturday GM Chess Tournament in Belgrade. Humpy adopted the Nimzo Indian defence and humbled the Yugoslav opponent in 45 moves in a rook pawn ending game and will now take on Ognjan Todorov of Bulgaria in the final 11th round where she requires a minimum draw to win the title. The 14-year-old, who leads the table with 8 points is closely followed by Mihajilo Stojenovic (Yugoslavia) with 7.5 but a draw in the last round would ensure the title to Humpy as she had defeated Stojenovic in the fifth round. Humpy's eight points came from six wins and four draws off the 10 games held so far. (PTI)Topics mentioned in this article
