The Andhra Pradesh government yesterday honoured 14-year-old Humpy, who won the Junior Women's World Chess Championship at Athens. The young champion was awarded a total of Rs 35 lakh in prize money and her father-cum-coach K Ashok was given Rs five lakh by the Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu. Winning has become a habit for 14-year-old Koneru Humpy. After her hat-trick win at under-10, under-12 and under-14 world chess championships, Humpy is looking forward for the Women's World championship. "In 2-3 years I want to win the women world championship and I want to improve my international rating. Actually my life's ambition is to win the Open World Cup", expressed, Koneru Humpy. Molding this prodigy and guiding her with the right moves is none other than her father and coach, K Ashok, who has been a former state chess champion himself. He spotted his daughter's talent at the age of 6 when she helped him out of a difficult chess move. "She tried to find a good move in that position and after that I observed that, that move was particularly analyzed by a grandmaster in that game. I saw some talent is in her and I decided to coach her," expressed, K Ashok, former state chess champion and coach. Now with Andhra Pradesh producing world class players like P Harikrishna, Vijayalakshmi and now Humpy, the elated father is busy with the idea of setting up a coaching academy for more future champions. "When I met the honorable CM of our state Chandrababu Naidu and he honoured her with Rs 5 lakh and recognised me as a coach, I felt this is my responsibility to do something for the state. I decided to start an academy and bring up some children who are interested in this game," stated, Koneru Ashok. His dream of starting a chess academy might come true sooner than later, the government is enthusiastic about the current crop of chess players in the state and apart from the cash award the government has given a plot of land to put this dream to reality.
