New Delhi:India have won three medals for the first time in Olympics with pugilist Vijender Kumar ensured of at least a bronze after beating Ecuador's Carlos Gongora 9-4 in the quarterfinal of the 75kg middleweight boxing event in Beijing. This would be India's first medal in boxing in the Olympic Games.
After Akhil Kumar and Jitnder Kumar disappointed, Vijender Kumar held his nerves and outplayed Gongora. With his sharp reflexes and sound defense, he did not allow his opponent to gain points.
This is how he won:
Round 1: 2-0
Vijender started off aggressively and quickly opened his account. He made sure he did not commit the mistake that Akhil Kumar in the bantamweight category and defended well. Gongora looked clueless as the Indian took a lead of 2-0.
Round 2: 2-1
In the second round, Gongora hit back and picked one point. But that was that. Vijender with his left-hand jabs gained 2 more points, taking the total lead to 4-1.
Round 3: 3-1
In the round three, Vijender went for the kill and took the lead to 7-2. With the score reading 7-2 in favour of Vijender after the penultimate round, the Ecuadorean needed to go all out in the fourth and final round.
Round 4: 2-2
Gongora did manage to close the gap but Vijender's evading tactics and excellent footwork won him the bout 9-4.
