Profile of Akhil Kumar
Akhil Kumar was born on March 27, 1981, in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh. He received his initial training at Bhiwani Boxing Club.

At the Olympics 2004 he lost his first round match to Jerome Thomas. He won the gold medal at the 4th Commonwealth Federation Boxing Championships, Glasgow in 2005. He defeated Bongani Mahalangu of South Africa by a narrow margin of 18-17 in the 54 kg final.
He won the gold medal in the Bantamweight 54 kg category at the 2006 Commonwealth Games by edging out Nigerian Nestor Bolum and defeating Mauritian southpaw Bruno Julie in the final.
Akhil qualified for the 2008 Olympics beating among others Worapoj Petchkoom at the Asian qualifying boxing tournament in Bangkok.
He made his way through to the second round in the Bantamweight 54 kg category at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China after beating Frenchman Ali Hallab, on points 12-5 in the round of 32. In the round of 16, he beat current world champion Sergey Vodopyanov coming from 2-6 down in the second round of the bout. The score was tied 9-9 at the end of the fourth round but the judges' decision went in Akhil's favour on account of having landed a greater number of punches to his opponent's body.
In the quarterfinal on Monday, Akhil was knocked out by Moldova's Veaclesav Gojan.
Akhil received the Arjuna award in 2005.
