New Delhi:In a bizarre incident that played out during the Delhi state boxing championship, a boxer and his supporters beat up referee after the bout.
The boxer Parveen was at the losing end and the referee Omkar was badly beaten up. The referee is still in shock after the horrific incident.
"These boys accused me of wrong doing as a referee. But there were three others as well. Why only blame me? After that we were locked in a room and beaten up with glass bottles and trophies," said Omkar, injured Boxing referee.
"In fact, the entire Academy team was involved in the incident and I can even recognise the four men who beat me," he added.
Insiders feel that this incident was the outcome of in house politics within the boxing federation, coupled with the animosity between various clubs and boxers in the Capital.
"The club system which exists is a little unfair. When we use members as referees or judges they tend to favour their own boxers and this often leads to a conflict of interests. But the fact is that such incidents even take place in the international circuit," said O P Bhardwaj, Deputy Chairman, Delhi Boxing Federation.
So a once full trophy cabinet has lost some of its precious silverware, thanks to a battle that's brought the Delhi Boxing Federation and its members into disrepute.
And it's going to take a lot more than just glue to fix the damage done.
