New Delhi:
Indian women boxers are preparing to repeat their coveted Venus Cup performance in Denmark as the world championship starts in Delhi on Saturday. In Denmark Laila Alis made the world sit up and take notice when she beat the best boxers in the world. The Indians bagged 10 medals including five golds there. At the world championship, leading the Indians is MC Marykom of Manipur. The 23-year-old light flyweight boxer will spearhead the Indian challenge alongside fellow Manipuri L Sarita Devi. But for Marykom, who won the 46 kg gold at the last two world championships, a special milestone awaits. "I will try to complete a hat-trick. I'm quite confident", said Marykom, the 46 kg category boxer. "We've watched our opponents and worked on our strength - the fitness, technique, practise and throwing stronger punches," she said. Fitness is one of the areas the team has stressed on, in a series of conditioning camps since March. The 13 boxers will have their task cut out, as they face close to 200 boxers from over 30 countries. The coach though believes the areas they've worked on make them all genuine medal prospects. "We can say speed work in the ring, as well as bag and pad to improve the accuracy and speed of the punch," said the coach for the Indian team Anup Kumar. "Our target area, especially taking into account the scoring time, is the speed of the punches, puting weight behind the punch," he said. It will certainly take a lot to stop this bunch from winning a host of medals at the upcoming world championships. They won just one gold at the last edition. But just looking at their level of fitness, and the amount of work that they've put into their skill and technique they seem set to win many, many more this time around.Topics mentioned in this article
