Kolkata:
When Mohammad Ali Qamar from Kolkata won a gold medal in Manchester, he became the first Indian to win a gold at boxing in the Commonwealth Games. The city burst into celebrations and now, his family is waiting for him to get back home. According to Asit Banerjee, President, Bengal Amateur Boxing Federation, "It is a record in Indian boxing. We have never won a gold in boxing at the Commonwealth. And this time, it is gold, silver and bronze. We are thrilled because Ali has made Bengal proud by creating history." Ali's house is located in a narrow lane in Kolkata's Kidderpore area. He lives there with his widowed mother and seven siblings. Though extremely proud of her son, Ali's mother never watches him while he is in the ring. Shehnaz Akhtari, Ali's mother, said, "They both fight and then they both get hurt. So I don't like watching that. But then when he manages to win, he wins a lot." "This is a very proud moment for us in Kidderpore," remarked, Mohammad Khalid Qamar, Ali's brother. Ali is already being hailed as the Mohammad Ali of India, but his family is hoping the gold medal at Manchester is just a stepping stone to greater things, such as a gold at the 2004 Olympics.Topics mentioned in this article
