It was a Bangalorean who started the demolition of Banga Beats with Anup Sridhar notching up an upset 21-12 21-18 victory against world no.8 Hu Yun in the first men's singles to give Pune a 1-0 lead.
World number three Juliane Schenk put it across Carolina Marin 21-20 21-10 in the women's singles to take Pune to a commanding position.
Post her win, Juliane said, "I have been trying to give my best to the league from the beginning. I knew today's match was tough and therefore I had prepared myself well in advance. This planning helped me win over Carolina." (In image: Carolina Marin of Spain)
Trailing 0-2, Bangalore's Carsten Mogensen and Akshay Dewalkar then took the court but lost 18-21 18-21 against the experienced pair of Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Kiong Tan Wee which allowed the Pistons to take an unassailable 3-0 lead. (In image: Morgensen and Akshay of Bangalore)
Sourabh Varma then caused another upset to beat favourite P Kashyap in the fourth tie. He won 19-21, 21-18, 11-4 after losing the first game.
With Varma's win over Kashyap, Pune went into second place on the points-table, eclipsing Mumbai Masters. They now have 14 points as compared to 13 of Mumbai.
Pune Pistons represented by 'local' favourite Ashwini Ponnappa and Joachim Fischer Nielsen while Banga Beats' charge led by Carolina Marin and Carsten Mogensen, then clashed in the mixed doubles encounter.
Pune started well by winning a close first game 21-20.
Carolina Marin/Carsten Morgensen though gave Banga Beats something to cheer on a poor day for them. The pair beat Ponnappa/Nielsen 20-21, 21-14, 11-8.
