Melbourne: Powerful Czech Tomas Berdych moved into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Sunday with a straight-sets victory over South African Kevin Anderson.

The world number six defeated Anderson 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (15/13) in 2hr 44min to set up a clash against top-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic or Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka, who meet later on Sunday.

Berdych survived a nerve-racking tiebreaker in which Anderson had five set points.

Coming off his leading role in the Czech Republic's victory in the Davis Cup final in November, Berdych finally sealed the match at his fifth opportunity.

"I had chances all through the third set that I should have taken but I'm happy I made it through," Berdych said.

"It will be my third quarter-final. Lucky third time, this should be the one, right? If I play Novak, it's going to be a great match, a tough battle.

"I don't want the same result as the last two times I was in the quarter-finals."

Berdych was defeated in straight sets by Djokovic in 2011. Last year, he bowed out to Spain's Rafael Nadal.
