Mumbai:
American sprinter-cum-hurdler Devers overcame Graves' Disease, a debilitating chronic thyroid disorder, before winning her first gold medal in the 100m sprint at the Barcelona Games in 1992.
She then repeated the feat four years later at Atlanta to become only the second woman to win the prestigious event at two consecutive Olympics, before adding the 4x100m relay gold to her kitty in the same Games.
Devers also became the 100m sprint and hurdles champion at the Stuttgart World Championships in 1993, before clinching the hurdles gold twice more in the 1995 and 1999 World Championships.
Moroccan middle distance ace El Guerrouj, nicknamed "The King of the Mile", began his domination of the 1500m in 1995 and won World Championship gold medals over that distance in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics El Guerrouj won the metric mile and 5000m gold in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games to become the first man to achieve the 1500-5000m double since the legendary Flying Finn Paavo Nurmi in 1924.
Over a nine-year period, the Moroccan middle distance ace raced in 86 finals at 1500m and the mile and won 83 of those competitions.
He was named best athlete of the year by International Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 2001 and 2002 after remaining unbeaten in more than 20 races and thus becoming the first man to win back-to-back Athlete of the Year title.
In earlier editions of the Mumbai Marathon, world track and field legends Michael Johnson, Mike Powell (both of USA), Linford Christie, Steve Ovett and Kelly Holmes (from Britain) have graced the event apart from India's long jump queen Anju Bobby George and Kenya's long distance ace Paul Tergat.
