Half Marathon: Kirui, Sun emerge winners
Paul Kirui of Kenya has won the elite IAAF World Half Marathon Championships for men being held in Delhi today.

Paul Kirui of Kenya has won the elite IAAF World Half Marathon Championships for men being held in Delhi today. Kirui clocked 1 hour 02 min and 15 sec to take the top spot ahead of Tanzania's Joseph Fabiano (1:02.31), the silver medallist in last year's half marathon. Ahmad Abdullah Hassan finished third with a timing of 1:02.36. Hassan, an Asian record holder in 5,000m and 10,000m, is from Qatar. Sun triumphs among eves The women's race was won by Yingjie Sun of China. Sun came up with a national record to take the top honours with a timing of 1 hour 08 min 40 sec. Kenya's Lydia Cheromei took the second spot clocking 1:09:00, her personal best, while Romanian Constantina Tomescu-Dita came third in 1:09.07. Title favourite Sonia O'Sullivan was relegated to the fourth spot as she finished the race in 1:10.33. Africa dominates The men's race was dominated by the African nations with Kenya coming in first, Ethiopia second and Uganda third. Ram Bahadur Subba at the 59th place was the top finisher among the Indians with a timing of 1:10.33. Mukesh Kumar Yadav (1:11.53) came 65th, Ajit Singh 66th (1:12.05) and Raj Kumar 69th clocking 1:12.12. Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the 13th World Half Marathon, the first to be held in an Asian city. A heavy security blanket was thrown around Delhi with over a thousand police personnel and about 500 traffic policemen overseeing the 21-kilomtere run.
